Believe it or not, there’s a lot of science behind our feelings. Joy is generated in the limbic system, which is the same part of the brain that controls your emotions, behavior and memory. Different from happiness, the feeling of joy is subconscious and we can actually train our brains and ourselves–just like any other habit that you may have.

Focus on gratitude
Make a list, either in your head or on paper, of things that you’re grateful for.
Deep breathing and being aware in the present moment is an important practice that can help bring peace and calm into your life.
Boost happy hormones
Exercise, outdoor time, smiling and hugging are all ways to boost your happiness hormones.

Give to others
Acts of kindness are a great way to generate feelings of joy. Think about the last time you gave someone a gift. How did you feel?
