Ladies Hats Can Be Show Stoppers at the Races

Ladies hats at the Kentucky Derby make elaborate fashion statements at this annual thoroughbred racing event. Every year, women add pizzazz by wearing elaborate, colorful hats to the racetrack. Fashion at the racetrack is part of this world-famous horse race tradition.

Time.com published a visual display of hats worn at the 1945 Derby. Even though the 1945 Kentucky Derby was wet, the rain didn’t dampen the ladies’ fashion spirits. Jockey Eddie Arcaro rode Hoop Jr. over a muddy track against a field of 15. Hoop Jr. won the race by six lengths.

As you can tell, I’m a big fan of the Kentucky Derby (actually the Triple Crown series). So, as I waited for the 2017 race, I looked back at the 2016 Derby. Forbes.com assembled a slide show of 2016 ladies’ hat statements. Undefeated Nyquist won the 2016 Kentucky Derby.

Looking at past Kentucky Derby races is a fun way to get your mindset for the 2017 race with happy anticipation.
