The rules are the rules. How many times have you heard that phrase? Rulebooks govern so many facets of life—from sports and academics to home life.

The Purpose Behind the Rules

Having rules gives a foundation to build discipline, including consequences, rewards, enforcement, and communication. They provide a framework for behavior, and in a way, they serve as an equalizer.

Rules Drama in Beauty Pageant

This past summer Génesis Dávila was crowned as Miss Florida USA. Unfortunately, her reign only lasted one week. The contest’s organizers alleged that she had broken the rules by using professional stylists to help her with her hair and makeup. They stripped her of her title.

The drama doesn’t end here. Ms. Dávila has filed a $15 million defamation lawsuit against the pageant owners and executive producer Grant Gravitt. She claims the allegations are false, and her reputation has been adversely affected. I guess we’ll have to keep an eye on this story to see how it unfolds.

Regardless of the outcome, Mr. Gravitt succinctly defined the purpose of rules when he said,  “(Miss Dávila) sought an unfair competitive advantage….We have a zero-tolerance policy on rules….it’s all about keeping an equal and level playing field.”

Yes, rules are meant to be followed, not broken. And, if you don’t play by them, there are consequences for violations. I hope Ms. Dávila’s case has a happy ending. For the rest of us, let’s avoid pushing the envelope.
