Today is Memorial Day, a day dedicated to remembering all fallen soldiers. More than 1.3 million American soldiers have died in 35 “conflicts” that required military action by US troops. You can see details here.

Of course, the 1.3 fallen soldiers do not reflect the countless family members and friends whose lives were completely changed by these tragic deaths.  My uncle was a POW during the Korean War. I lost a childhood friend in the fields of Vietnam. Our parish suffered the loss of a former altar server in the mountains of Afghanistan. I know you can add your own experiences.

This short poem sums up the gain by so much bloodshed — the precious prize.

All we have of freedom,
All we use or know,
This our fathers bought for us
Long, long ago. ~Rudyard Kipling

Take a few minutes to say a short prayer for all our fallen soldiers. We can worry about summer later.
