How to Feel Settled in Your New Home

Moving into a new home can be great. I know from experience that while starting over in a new place is fun, it can also be incredibly exhausting. Making the call to move, whether down the street or to a different city or state, is an exciting and significant life decision.

Unfortunately, settling into life in your new digs can be difficult. Getting used to the new sounds and feel of the environment isn’t always easy, but there are things you can do to help you feel more at home sooner rather than later.

I’ve found a few great tips on the Craft-O-Maniac blog that I’d love to share. These seem like wonderful ways to help you settle in your new home.

  • Have friends over

Hosting your friends and family can benefit you and your new space in many ways. Aside from encouraging you to unpack sooner rather than later, having those familiar presences around to keep you company will help you acclimate more easily to your new home.

  • Buy with confidence

Taking a step back, start with buying smart. Make sure you do thorough walk-throughs and inspections of your home before you purchase. When you do make the leap, don’t forget to get the best home insurance and warranty so you can be prepared for any challenges that come your way.

  • Create familiar spaces

Recreating some of your favorite focal points from your previous home can help you re-create the ambiance that you loved so much. Gather your favorite photo frames, candles or whatever you need, and set up a few similar spots in your new place.

  • Crash on the couch

It might sound strange, but falling asleep on your sofa is one of the best ways to relax. Chances are, you’ve napped a time or two on your couch, so waking up on your old, familiar couch in a new, unfamiliar space could help you feel at home.

  • If you’re renting

Unfortunately, renting limits the type of “decorating” you can do. To be safe, be sure to ask your landlord first before doing any personalization/renovation. If you’re limited on decorating choices, buy a couple of houseplants. They will add color and texture to your surroundings. Here’s a guide to which plants to buy to purify your home. And don’t forget that artwork is another way to put your personal stamp on your surroundings.

Over a few weeks, your new home’s unfamiliarity will wane, and before you know it, it will become your “home sweet home.”
