As our July 4th week ends, I’d like to share a Mark Twain quote and some of my thoughts about patriotic feelings.
“Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.” – Mark Twain
I think that in this quote, Mark Twain contends that a true patriot is a person who pledges to make our country a better place for all citizens. Patriotism goes beyond waving flags and singing national anthems. Earlier this week, my street was lined with US flags, and houses were festooned with red-white-and-blue decorations. Two days later, the flags and bunting have been packed away.
Twain’s quote reminds us that we can’t turn patriotism on and off like a light switch. We can’t put it on a shelf and bring it out on special national holidays and occasions. Instead, it’s a way of life. We live out American values every day.
Mr. Twain dares us to be more than flag wavers. He encourages us to dedicate ourselves to making our country a better place for our citizens and a strong defender of our democratic values.
God bless America.
